Nordmann fir JIFFY® 15-25 cm - 3 years old - Ø 42

The root ball is made of peat, the pH of which is adjusted to the pH required by Nordmann firs. A net that is permeable to the roots holds the peat together. The seeds are placed in a small depression in the jiffy, which resembles a flat disc when dry. Only when the peat comes into contact with water does it swell into the finished jiffy pot and the seed germinates. After about 14 days, the roots start to grow through the net. The tips that grow out of the net dry out but thereby stimulate root growth inside the jiffy. New fine roots appear. This process is repeated and is called air pruning. The roots that grow very symmetrically in this way are the key to a successful culture. After about 3 weeks, start fertilising carefully. The plants stand in special air boxes until they are planted out, which keep the jiffies at a distance. This is how air pruning of the roots occurs in the first place. In addition, this way the plants have the right distance from each other so that they can develop optimally. The plants remain in the greenhouse for about a year before they are brought outside in May/June for the rest of the cultivation period, where they can harden off. Then, from August (depending on the weather), they are planted in their final place in the Christmas tree farm. August planting has the advantage that due to the high activity of the roots during this time, the plants grow without problems. But even with early spring planting, the plants are less at risk from drought due to the rapid growth. Planting can be done either mechanically or with a specially developed planting tube.
